Handling combustion gases in a hostile environment

A middle eastern customer with a particularly demanding application for combustion gas handling turned to Halifax Fan who designed and manufactured a customised solution to meet the exacting requirements in full.

Halifax Fan prides itself on its ability to carry out the design and manufacture of complex fan assemblies and challenging special projects from concept through to in-house testing, despatch and delivery. The customer recognising this strength, presented Halifax with a major complete design and build project challenge.

Halifax Fans put dust in a spin

Despite the recent fashion for ‘vortex’ vacuum cleaners, the principle of the centrifuge applied to air filtration is far from novel but is highly effective. Put simply, if air containing particulates is spun in a cylinder, the heavier particles will be flung off to the periphery and can be bled off and expelled while the cleaned air passes through the outlet in the centre of the other end of the tube.

Fan/damper assembly with a polished external finish

In this application, the health and hygiene requirements of a beverage bottling application demanded an unusual approach to the fan housing. Halifax Fan’s client, a manufacturer of high quality bottling equipment, required an integrated fan and filter assembly with a hand-wheel operated damper control, as a standard piece of OEM equipment. Hygiene regulations were stringent, demanding an assembly fully housed within an easily cleaned, polished, stainless steel housing.

Green considerations take priority over first cost on Mixlance batch heater plant

By adding inverter speed control to the exhaust fans on two new 3 ton asphalt batch plants, the first of which is currently undergoing startup trials at Local Asphalt, Leeds (Cemex), Mixlance (Technical Services) Ltd of Measham will achieve substantial energy savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions sufficiently to attract EU LIFE funding for the project. The plant is described as Europe’s most technologically advanced batch heater plant. Delivering 80 tons of coated material per hour, the new plant design is more compact, is faster, quieter, cleaner and more economical that all previous plants.

Halifax Fans aids Dounreay decommissioning

Because of the radiation hazard, decommissioning of any nuclear facility takes a great deal longer than building it in the first place. Consequently, decommissioning of the Dounreay fast reactor research site is scheduled to last until 2025. Dounreay was built in the 1950s and, during its active life, over 180 separate facilities were built on the site. Of these, some 50 involved the presence of radioactive material and of necessity; special controls are in place around these to contain any radiation hazard during decommissioning.

Off Shore/Marine

Halifax fans meet Hamworthy Combustion’s needs for FPSO boilers

As global oceanic exploration for and production of oil and gas moves into ever deeper waters, the role of Floating Production Storage & Offloading facilities (FPSOs) has been emphasised. FPSOs initially were redundant oil tankers converted to floating static processing facilities able to offload onto mobile tankers but more recently customer designed new-build vessels are making greater inroads into the market.

Off-shore oil rig incinerator fan

For this application, Halifax Fans’ client supplied an incinerator to operate on an offshore oil platform. The offshore industry is renowned for their demanding safety and operating specifications and it was Halifax Fans’ reputation in providing high specification bespoke fan projects for the petrochemical industry onshore that gave the client confidence to select Halifax for this project. The decision was made more crucial as this was the first incinerator rig ever to be installed on an offshore oil platform.

Halifax ATEX blowers kill all known germs

With MRSA and C. Diff. seemingly endemic in our hospitals, this might well be called the age of the superbug. For that reason sterilisation of everything used in a hospital is absolutely critical and most of us visualise sterilisation as a high temperature process. However, not everything medical can withstand the high temperatures necessary to bring about absolute sterility. Items such a soft rubber goods, surgical implants, intravenous kits and the like would all be damaged by high temperatures.

300MW biomass co-firing plant adopts Halifax Fans

As part of its on-going commitment to turn to renewable sources of energy, Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is installing a new 300MW biomass burning system at Ferrybridge ‘C’ power station. Swedish biomass burning specialist TPS has chosen Halifax Fan Ltd of Brighouse as the supplier for the primary air fans and the high temperature secondary air and flue gas recirculation fans. Although Ferrybridge ‘C’ has been burning biomass together with its coal firing (known as co-firing) for some time, this has been limited by the capacity of the fuel mills, since the biomass fuel has had to be ground into very fine particles to burn alongside the pulverised coal in the furnace.
